Hola Mohalla: The Inheritance of Transcendence
Imagine travelling 300 years back in the times of valour and glory, jostling through the cheerful crowd, breathing the air of old world charm. This is what it feels like to experience the unique festival: Hola Mohalla. It is spectacularly celebrated in Anandpur Sahib, a small town by the Sutlej in north-east Punjab, nestled in an oddly dusty plain beneath gently rolling hills. With a few fleeting symbols of modernity, the festivity sets the perfect contrast between the past and the present. In times of eroding ethnic practices, it is a visual and cultural treat for photographers to witness the celebrations of Hola Mohalla holding on to the heroic style in its pristine form. There is a photograph at every step. To nurture the ability to pick a moment in space–resonating the vast experience of centuries gone by, held together with the power of events that combine the worlds–is where the workshop will focus on.
Guru Gobind Singh Ji in Anandpur Sahib carried out the first procession of Hola Mohalla in 1701. Living up to its legacy even today, the festival is annually celebrated a day after the festival of colours, Holi. Thousands of people come together to participate in Hola Mohalla fair that traditionally goes on for a week. Participants camp out and enjoy various displays of fighting prowess and bravery, and listen to kirtan, music, poetry, and religious lectures. What a way to strengthen the soul of community!
The magnificence of the Nihangs: splendidly turbaned and bearded, sporting saffron sashes and motley regalia on their blue robes; the military ambience, the processions carried out on horses and elephants, accompanied by war drums and standard-bearers-it all does the magic. On the last day, a long procession led by the Chosen Five–as grandly as it was back in the olden times–starts from Takth Keshgarh Sahib, one of the five Sikh religious seats, and passes through various important gurdwaras and concludes with a long, military-style procession.
The community has aged gracefully, lived timelessly, and flourished over centuries, celebrating brotherhood and reminding people of the love of the Almighty. It is in this journey, that one can feel transcending from one world into another, royally. It’s clearly carnival time at Anandpur Sahib every year.
